Can divorce be better than marriage for children?

A lot of parents struggle with the idea of getting divorced. They know that they would like to split up and that they would each personally be happier if they were no longer married. But they have children now, and they generally believe that it will be better for the children if they stay together.

But is this true, or could it actually be better for the kids if the parents split up? It all depends on the situation.

What is their home life like?

It is best for children to be involved with both of their parents, which is often why parents think that they need to stay married. They want to help raise the children and give them that sort of stability. They may have read that it helps children academically to have two parents who are involved in their lives.

This can be true, but the stress of a dysfunctional marriage can be very difficult for children to deal with. This can actually limit their development or teach them negative traits that they will carry with them for the rest of their life.

So, for children who are living in homes with a high-conflict marriage, it can actually be worse for them to feel like they are trapped in that type of home life, and it may be better for them if their parents do get divorced. This can reduce the stress on the children, and both parents can certainly stay involved even after the divorce.

Starting the process

Divorce can be more complicated as a parent, so be sure you understand all of your rights as you and your spouse prepare to get this process started.
