Why money does not prevent divorce

It’s very clear that money doesn’t prevent divorce, and all you have to do is look at celebrity divorce stories. Some of the richest people in the world have gotten divorced.

This is worth pointing out because financial troubles are often blamed for your everyday divorces. It’s known that financial stress can really take a toll on a couple’s relationship. In a lot of cases where couples decide to split up, they cite this type of financial stress as a reason.

This could make you think that all you really need to do to stay together with your spouse is to become excessively wealthy. Then you won’t have any financial stress, and your marriage will be happy. We know that this doesn’t work, but why not?

Two things to consider

There are two major reasons to consider, starting with the fact that financial stress doesn’t always mean not having enough money. It can also mean disagreeing about how to spend money or disagreeing about how much money to save or invest. Any time that couples aren’t on the same page can lead to disagreements that will eventually cause a divorce, no matter how much money they have.

The second thing to note is that a lot of relatively wealthy couples – perhaps not the richest people in the country, but richer than the average American – simply have a higher cost of living. They may feel the same level of stress about not being able to make ends meet, but it’s just that all of their bills are so much higher. They make a lot of money, but that doesn’t always eliminate this stress.

If you and your spouse are deciding to get a divorce, be sure you know what legal steps to take, especially to protect your finances.
