Guardian Ad Litem For The Children’s Best Interest
If you are getting divorced or are involved in a child custody dispute, you may feel like the victim. Often your children may also feel like victims and will likely feel torn between their parents.
In these cases, it is important to have someone advocating on behalf of the children’s best interests. At The Carver Law Firm, L.L.C., that is what I do for clients throughout Myrtle Beach and the surrounding South Carolina communities.
I am The Carver Law Firm, L.L.C.‘s, principal attorney Lisa M. Carver and along with my 18 years of legal experience (almost ten have been focused only on family law), I am also a certified guardian ad litem for family law matters. I am committed to protecting the children I represent. Contact me online or call 843-502-0368 to learn more about the role of the guardian ad litem in divorce and custody proceedings.
How Does A Guardian Come To Recommendations Regarding What May Be In A Child’s Best Interest?
When serving as a guardian ad litem, one of the most important things to reiterate is that I am advocating for the children’s best interests.
I encourage parents not to impose their own thoughts about the other parent on their child or children. Building these types of alliances with your child can damage your relationship and trying to set your child against the other parent can be just as damaging. Many parents ask at what age the kids can decide with which parent they would like to live. South Carolina does not allow children to make these determinations and while children of appropriate age, education and cognitive ability can be asked if they have a preference, this is one of several factors that the court weighs in a custody case.
I Am The Eyes And Ears For The Court As A Guardian
I know the possibility of losing custody of your children is terrifying, and I know that sometimes you may like to make the situation just disappear. However, that is not the right solution. In guardian ad litem matters, I serve as the eyes and ears of the court, looking out only for the best interests of the children.
